Fable runs small-group food, history, and ghost tours in San Diego. Our guides are the product — the research behind a story, the pacing of a route, the read of a group on a warm Friday night in the Gaslamp. If you love this city and know how to hold a room, we would like to meet you.
Tour Guide — San Diego
You will lead scheduled walking tours through the Gaslamp Quarter and downtown, working from a Fable playbook you are trained on and then make your own. Groups run 15 to 25 guests, tours run about 90 minutes, and most of the schedule sits on evenings and weekends.
What the role involves
- Leading tours. Meeting guests at the start point, setting the tone in the first two minutes, and running a well-paced route from there.
- Knowing the material. We hand you a researched script with sources, documented history kept separate from tour lore. You learn it, then deliver it in your own voice.
- Looking after the group. Street crossings, stragglers, accessibility needs, the guest who wants to talk for ten minutes. Safety and pace are yours.
- Closing well. Answering questions, pointing people toward a good dinner, and inviting an honest review.
Who tends to do well here
- Natural storytellers. You can hold the attention of twenty strangers outdoors, over traffic noise, without leaning on a microphone.
- Genuinely curious about San Diego. You will get questions the script does not cover, and saying so comfortably matters more than bluffing.
- Reliable. Guests booked weeks ago. Showing up early, every time, is most of the job.
- Easy with people. Bachelorette parties, corporate groups, nervous first-time visitors, and the occasional skeptic, often on the same tour.
Experience guiding, teaching, performing, or working in hospitality helps, but none of it is required. We train.
The practical details
- Based in San Diego, or close enough to be dependable on an evening schedule.
- Evening and weekend availability, which is when most tours run.
- On your feet. Tours cover roughly two miles at an easy pace, outdoors, in most weather.
- 18 or older and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Compensation is discussed early in the process.
